Limeades for Learning from Sonic

Sonic is partnering with DonorsChoose.org to support public school teachers across the country. With your help, we can fund classroom projects and help teachers inspire their students to learn.

Your part is simple. Just order any drink* at Sonic during September, and you’ll be able to come back here and vote for your favorite teacher’s project. Sonic will donate more than a half a million dollars to the projects that receive the most votes.

TEACHERS:  Have a great classroom project that needs funding?
Sign up and submit your project at DonorsChoose.org. Make sure to identify yourself as a Sonic teacher when registering. Be creative! Voting begins Aug. 31.

SIPPERS:  During September, when you buy a drink at Sonic, you can head here to vote for your favorite teacher’s project. It’s never too early to start helping. Go to DonorsChoose.org to start helping now.

Skills Tutor Update

Posted by jenmalonetn | Posted in Assessment, Educational Resources, Important Reminders, Lesson Planning, Odds and Ends, Technology | Posted on August 14, 2009

Skills Tutor Quick Start Guide

Hello everyone!

I need to let you know about some changes to Skills Tutor for this year.  I have attached a Quick Start Guide for setting up classes.  But there are a few bugs you need to know about.  When you are enrolling students in a class, the Enroll Students button is sluggish as well as the Done Enrolling Students button.  Wait a little bit for them to come up.  Also, you can assign an icon for your class so that when you go to the labe you can tell the students to click on the apple or bus, etc…  You do this by clicking on your class and then clicking Edit Class Properties.

Another bug they are working on is with Internet Explorer.  Sometimes you will not find a scrollbar on a report which is something they were fixing.  It shouldn’t happen with Firefox or Safari.  If it does happen to you, please let me know so I can notify them the problem continues to lurk. 🙂

Don’t forget to turn off the pop-up blocker when using Skills Tutor, especially when trying to print reports.

When students are working, they no longer have to keep hitting the done button.  They can hit home to get back to their assignment list.  On the assignment list, it will show the student how they scored on the assignment.  If you click the score, it will show how many times they took it and their score for each.

You will find more drop downs for data as well.  Anything that is blue highlighted should be a hyperlink.

Presently, if you have new students, I must add them.  Please email me their names.  If we have the state id number, I will set them up with that.  If not, I will set them up with a different user name until the id comes in.  Mrs. Amburn said that can take up to a month. 🙁

If you have forgotten how to log in, let me know and I will send you that information.

Lastly, a little tip.  When you are giving assignments, you can put a number of assignments under one assignment name.  For example, you could call it First 6 Weeks Language Arts, and give all of the assignments for LArts under that heading.  That way, you should be able to see all of those when you are looking at assignments in the gradebook.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need any help setting up your classes!

Fire Marshal Visit — Room Decorations

Posted by jenmalonetn | Posted in Important Reminders, Odds and Ends | Posted on June 9, 2009

I wanted to give you a “heads up” about decorating your room for the coming year.  The Fire Marshal paid a summer visit today to let me know there are tighter guidelines for the coming year.   You may not have anything hanging from your classroom ceiling, wall decorations need to be around 20% of the wall space, and any fabric on curtains or upholstered furniture items must be sprayed with flame retardent.  In addition, storage closets must be neat and orderly.

Teacher Licensure

Link to Teacher Licensure Forms

All teacher license renewals are the responsibility of the teacher.  You must submit the standard renewal form which can be downloaded at the above link.  Any professional level licenses can be renewed at any time during the second five years of the life span of that license.  For example, a professional license with an expiration date of August 31, 2012 can now be renewed to extend its validity period to August 31, 2022.

Positive Behavior Supports — Need Volunteers

Posted by jenmalonetn | Posted in Important Reminders, Professional Development | Posted on May 13, 2009

On May 4, 2009 Sissy Foster met with Toia Jones, consulant with Edexcellence, regarding creating a partnership in which we can receive free technical assistance throughout the school year to implement a positive behavior support system within individual schools and/or entire school district.  In order for us to participate and receive this free technical assistance, we have to designate a team of individuals at each school (minimum four people per school) to start the process.  Several years ago we attempted to start this process but due to several reasons were not able to carry it out.

Mr. Honeycutt has indicated that he is in support of initiating the concept of positive behavior supports in our schools and across our district.  Highland Park Elementary has already taken the first steps in the process.   Our school needs four volunteers who would be willing to begin this process during the summer.  There is a workshop the school team can attend June 3-4, 2009, so we need to complete the registration process ASAP.

By developing a partnership with Edexcellence, we will also receive a 50% discount for all professional development workshops that are offered.  Edexcellence offers PD and technical assistance on a variety of topics.

I will need the names before Friday when I attend Principals’ Meeting.

You can count this professional development toward the two days of self-selected PD needed during 2009-2010.

Stimulus Money for Summer School

Posted by jenmalonetn | Posted in Important Reminders | Posted on May 13, 2009

From Kim McGimsey, Title I Coordinator

The date for summer school has been set.  It has been scheduled for July 13-17 and 20-24 from 8:30-12:30.   Transportation will be  provided if needed.     I need to know the teachers who are interested in working now that the date has been set.  Remember we are targeting students struggling in math (grades 3-8) with the focus being on the new state math standards .  Please ask your teachers to begin making a list of students who they feel would benefit from this opportunity.  Each teacher should have no more than 10 students.  I would suggest that the student list be greater than the number to be served to take into account that some students will not want to participate.  If that is the case,  then the teacher can notify the student next on the list for that grade level.

Eaton- Limit Four Teachers (two 3rd grade and two 4th grade) Total number of students 40

Please ask teachers interested in working to reply to me no later than Thursday, May 14.

It is imperative that we get this information out to parents very soon.   I will email a parent letter and summer school application to each school this week which should be mailed, emailed, or sent home in student folder/agenda,  in time to get a response prior to the last day of school.

Please call or email Kim McGimsey with questions or concerns regarding this information.  Tutoring information for school year 09-10 will be forth coming later.
